1920 Jan. 16: League of Nations meets for the first time Mohandas K. Gandhi became the leader of the Indian National Congress and led nonviolent disobedience against the British. Prohibition begins in the US. Italian Facists under Mussolini actively combat the communists. |
1921 In Russia the New Economic Plan is instituted. Riza Shah Pahlevi, an army officer, marches his troops against the Iran government. Great Britain gives Ireland dominion status, starting a civil war in Ireland. The Washington Naval Conference leads to a treaty between the US, Great Britian, Japan, Italy and France agreeing on a freeze on the number of capital ships for ten years. July 29: Adolf Hitler assumes control of National Socialist German Workers (Nazi) Party Oct. 27: Mussolini appointed Italian Premier; assumes dictatorial power |

1923 Irish civil war ends, and the rebels sign a peace treaty. The Sinn Fein is split. France occupies the Ruhr valley in order to collect reparations from Germany for WWI. Hyper inflation in Germany. By December it takes 7000 German marks to buy an American dollar. Nov. 8-9: Hitler's Munich Beer Hall Putsch fails Riza Shah Pahlevi becomes the prime minister of Iran. |
1924 First Danish women elected to national post. Lenin dies in January. The Dawes Plan is agreed upon to help the reconstrction in Germany. |
1925 July 18: Hitler's autobiography, Mein Kampf, is published Riza Shah Pahlevi becomes the Shah of Iran, and works to modernize Iran. The Locarno Pact defines Germany's western borders with France and Begium. |
1926 Jozef Pilsudski made himself a semidictator of Poland. Germany is admitted to the League of Nations. |
