1961 John F. Kennedy 1st Lady: Jacqueline Established the Peace Corps. In April, a force of anti-Castro Cubans, trained by the Central Intelligence Agency, staged an unsuccessful attempt to establish a beachhead at the Bay of Pigs, Cuba. In August, East Germany constructed a wall separating East and West Berlin. |
1962 On February 20, Lt. Col. John H. Glenn, Jr., became the first American to orbit the earth. After U.S. reconnaissance revealed that Soviet offensive missiles were being installed in Cuba, the United States established a naval "quarantine" around Cuba in October. The Soviets then withdrew their missiles. |
1963 On August 5, the United States, Britain, and the USSR signed a nuclear test-ban agreement, prohibiting atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. On August 28, more than 200,000 persons staged a march in Washington, D.C., dramatizing the demands of blacks for equal rights. 1965 On February 7, ordered the bombing of targets in North Vietnam and began escalating U.S. troop strength in Indochina. In April, ordered U.S. troops into the Dominican Republic to end a rebellion. Signed legislation setting up Medicare and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. |
1966 The Department of Transportation was formed. |
1967 Nominated Thurgood Marshall, a black, as an associate justice to the Supreme Court. Met with Soviet Premier Aleksei Kosygin in Glassboro, New Jersey. |
